Sound familiar?

Important things get lost between the channels.

In most organisations internal communication has grown over the years: a group chat here, a mailing list there, plus notice boards, phone chains and files on three different drives.

  • At school: Word about the project week arrives by email, the room change in a group chat. Cover for an absence gets arranged on the phone during the break.

  • In administration and practices: Quick exchanges run through private messengers — even though official or professional confidentiality applies.

  • In the workplace: The shift plan circulates as a photo in a group chat. Whoever is ill messages the manager on WhatsApp, and new staff have no idea where to find anything.

SELAS brings all of this into one place: reachable for everyone, with clear rules about who sees what.

Substitutions and shift swaps

When someone is away, the team organises itself.

No ringing around, no list in the staff room, no message to ten people at six in the morning. And leadership still stays in control.

  1. 1

    Report the absence

Whoever is away records the absence in SELAS. If a weekly plan is stored, the affected lessons or shifts are already selected.

  2. 2

    Short notice or planned

Short-notice absences such as illness go straight to the team. Planned absences that need approval go to leadership first. Once approved, the call for cover is triggered automatically. Each organisation decides for itself which absences need approval.

  3. 3

    Take it on

A single tap is enough, with a note for payroll if you like. Once every slot is covered, the absence switches to «covered», and completed calls for cover clear themselves away automatically.

«For us, substitutions sort themselves out almost on their own in no time — no ‹do you have time?› asking around, no digging through the free-period folder. And whoever takes it on states right away how it should be billed; that takes the load off the whole system and the office too.»
Marco Duss, Principal, Oberstufe Huttwil secondary school

Around 70 lessons covered out of 42 reported absences in the first six weeks.

Born in a school, it works just as well with shifts as with lessons: in the hotel, the practice, the workplace.

Channels

Important announcements reach everyone.

Posts, comments, reactions and surveys, neatly ordered by topic or team. What matters stays at the top.

  • Pinned posts for what matters
  • Surveys, anonymous if you wish
  • Set per channel who reads along and who can post

Chats

Quick exchanges, without a private messenger.

One-to-one and group chats with direct replies and read receipts. As familiar as a messenger, but under your control.

  • Read receipts configurable per organisation, so no one feels pressured to reply
  • Moderation traceable and logged
  • Problematic content can be reported confidentially

  • Assign to people or groups
  • Deadlines and checklists
  • What's done at a glance
Files & Office

One place to store files, instead of attachments back and forth.

Shared folders for the team and a personal space for each person. Word and Excel files can be edited right in the browser.

  • Share folders with people or groups
  • Office editing in the browser (add-on)
  • Your personal space stays private, even from the administration
SELAS file storage: folder «Staff» with subfolders and documents including size and author (demo data)
Calendar

All your dates in one place.

Shared dates for the school or workplace and personal dates, kept apart yet shown in a single view.

  • Filter shared and private dates separately
  • Bring in existing calendars: subscriptions, ics files, CSV
  • Multi-day items like camps, project weeks or company holidays as a bar across the month grid
SELAS calendar on a smartphone: month grid with date dots, a project-week bar and a day list (demo data)
Email

Your work inbox right inside SELAS.

Existing mailboxes are connected via IMAP: read, reply, forward, with attachments straight from your file storage. Your email provider stays the same. (add-on)

  • Attachments from your storage without the download detour
  • Formatted emails with bold, lists and links
  • A consistent signature from a few fields, the logo embedded for good and without tracking

Materials & inventory

Know what you have, and reorder in time.

Record stock, set minimum levels and store suppliers. When stock runs low, SELAS warns you, and the order list is created in one click: ready to print or as a CSV for the supplier.

  • Low-stock warning
  • Order list per supplier, to print or as CSV
  • Just for those in charge, or as an internal shop in a channel where the team orders itself
  • Your own barcodes for items, shelves and collections
IT service desk

One place for IT requests.

A channel becomes a help desk: requests come in as ordinary posts, the IT team sets them to «Accepted» and «Resolved». Whoever reported something sees the status at any time.

Info board

Everything new staff need on one page.

The organisation builds its own orientation pages from blocks: text, images, sticky notes, contacts, documents and links. For stand-ins or new seasonal staff, for example.

Made for your everyday.

For schools where children's data sets the standard.

SELAS was born in a school. Role separation, moderation and reporting paths are built in, not bolted on.

  • Substitutions with a weekly plan and approval by the school leadership
  • Safely include students from lower secondary (cycle 3) up (see protection block)
  • Channels for staff, year groups and subject teams
  • Teaching materials with locations: 12 in storage, 23 in room 5, 20 in room 6. You always know what is where.
  • School library by smartphone: scan the book, scan the child on the class list, done. If the child has a SELAS account, they receive the loan with a due date digitally, and reminders and overdue notices run automatically.
  • A shared calendar for camps, project weeks and events

In use at Oberstufe Huttwil.

Protection for children and young people

Safely include students, from lower secondary (cycle 3) up.

  • When a group chat gets out of hand

The teacher removes disruptive messages directly. Beforehand, SELAS reminds them to secure a record. Afterwards only a neutral note remains in the chat. The content is deleted; who intervened and when stays logged.

  • When someone is harassed

The person affected reports the message confidentially. The reported person learns nothing of it. The report goes to a responsible office at the school. If it is left unattended, it goes automatically to a second, named person after a deadline set by the school. Every look into the reported content is logged.

  • Private chats stay private

No one reads along in private chats between students, not even the operator of SELAS.

Data sovereignty & security

Your data stays in Switzerland. With a Swiss provider.

SELAS is developed and operated in Switzerland, on its own servers in Swiss data centres (Infomaniak, ISO 27001). There is no US subsidiary and no US cloud provider in between.

  • Swiss operation

The database, files and application run on infrastructure that SELAS operates itself. Only push notifications are technically delivered via Apple and Google, encrypted and with no readable content.

  • Separated data

Every organisation is separated from all others right down into the database. On every access, each individual row is checked.

  • Encryption

Connections with TLS 1.3, the servers' storage with AES-256.

  • No reading along

The operator takes no look into your organisation's content. Technical work happens only on your instruction, for a data export for example, and is logged.

  • Two-factor sign-in

    Required for administration accounts.

  • Checked before every change

Every change passes automated security tests — including checks that no organisation can see another's data — before it goes live.

To be honest: SELAS encrypts on the server side, not end to end. That is the only way moderation and reporting can work.

For your data-protection review we provide a security overview and the documents for a prior check.

Why the server location alone is not enough

For public bodies and holders of professional secrecy, what matters is which law the provider is subject to, not just where its servers stand. US providers can be compelled to hand over data under the CLOUD Act, even for data held in Switzerland. The conference of Swiss data protection commissioners considers outsourcing particularly sensitive data of public bodies to large US clouds unlawful «in most cases».

  • 2018

Since 2018 the US CLOUD Act has required American cloud providers by law to hand over customer data on the order of US authorities — expressly regardless of where in the world it is stored. No contract and no European data centre lifts this obligation.1

  • FISA 702

US intelligence services may surveil non-US persons via US providers — without suspicion of a crime, without an individual court order. And the provider is legally bound to stay silent about it.2

  • 10 June 2025

Asked by the French Senate whether Microsoft could guarantee that citizens' data would never be handed to US authorities without the consent of their own government, the legal head of Microsoft France answered under oath: «Non, je ne peux pas le garantir» — he could not guarantee it; it had, he said, never yet happened.3

  • 32 %

According to Microsoft's own transparency report, in the second half of 2025 about a third of all US government requests carried a secrecy order — the affected customer learns nothing of the access for as long as it applies.4

  • 18 Nov 2025

The conference of Swiss data protection commissioners draws the line: outsourcing particularly sensitive personal data of public bodies to large US SaaS solutions is unlawful «in most cases».5

Integrations

Ready for your existing systems.

SELAS has a documented interface and a file import. With them you can connect HR, scheduling or payroll systems. Which data flows is something we clarify with you during onboarding.

Open interface

A documented interface with its own access key per organisation. You decide what a connected system may see. Today the interface takes over people and master data; further data types we build out with you as needed.

File import

Take over people and master data via CSV or Excel, without any involvement from your previous provider. That way the rollout can start right away.

Only what's needed

Only the fields that are needed flow across, and they are held in Switzerland.

Typical connections: HR system · scheduling and time tracking · payroll · learning platform

Who is behind SELAS

Born in the staff room, not the boardroom.

I'm a teacher and spent ten years working with a large staff app. I know what works well day to day and what's missing.

In spring 2026 my school faced the question of how to reorganise its internal communication. On the table were a group chat called «sick», phone chains for every absence and yet another private messenger. I told the principal: I'll build it for you. Five days later he had his login.

Two months on, the school decided to go with SELAS. Ever since, the best ideas have come from everyday use. What's genuinely needed in daily work goes into the product. What only clutters stays out.

What this means for you: You talk directly to the person who builds SELAS, not to a ticketing system. Your feedback doesn't land in a queue, but in the next release.

And if something happens to me? A stand-in is appointed for emergencies: a federally certified IT specialist who knows SELAS as a testing and development partner and has access to the operation. The access credentials are securely deposited, and your data is held in an open standard format rather than a closed system.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to give up Microsoft 365 or our email addresses?

No. SELAS complements your existing tools. Mailboxes stay with your current provider and are connected, and Office files can still be edited.

Is there an app?

SELAS can be installed as an app on any smartphone, tablet and computer, with push notifications. No download from an app store is needed.

Does everyone need an email address?

Today, yes. Sign-in without a company email, for staff without a desk job for example, is in development.

How much effort is the rollout?

After a demo you test SELAS yourself for 30 days. Once the contract begins we take over setup and the import of people by file and train your team.

Which documents do we get for data protection?

A data processing agreement with technical and organisational measures and the list of sub-processors, plus a security overview for your review.

What happens to our data if we cancel?

After the contract ends you get your data back in a common format, or we delete it — entirely your choice. We confirm the deletion in writing on request.

Who helps if something doesn't work?

Our support is reachable by email at support@selasonline.org. You receive a reply within two working days.
